TAIWAN AND CHINA--THE AWKWARD COUPLE

Technically speaking, Taiwan is a part of China, but in reality, they are two separate countries with two separate identities.

And, until recently they rarely talked to each other.

Although he was successful in driving out the Japanese during World War II,

General Chiang Kai-sheklost the Chinese Civil War to the internal communist forces in 1949. He then fled to Taiwan, a Chinese island 100 miles off the coast. Vowing to reclaim the mainland.

Chiang Kai-shek and his band of nationalists set up a military dictatorship in Taiwan, and the island remained in a state of perpetual (if stable) martial law until 1987.

For nearly half a century capitalist Taiwan (the Republic of China) and communist China (the Peoples Republic of China) had virtually no diplomatic relations,

and travel between the two countries was strictly forbidden.

The nations had separated but refused to reconcile or get divorced.

After all, reconciliation would mean one nation giving in to the other, and divorce would lead to all-out war.

Even now, China has hundreds of missiles pointed at Taiwan, which they threaten to launch should Taiwan declare independence.

In case you were won- dering how this affects the United States, the American government has sworn to profect Taiwan in the event of an invasion.

If they go to war. we would probably go along with them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Months before his death in 1988,Taiwan's last dictator,Chiang Kai-shek's son Chiang Ching-kuo,allowed the nation to become a democracy. It was at this time that Ma Ying-jeou,the future president, first made his mark on the international scene.

Ma came from one of the families that had followed General Chiang Kai-shek to Taiwan, and Ma's father had decided that his only son's life would have national purpose. The expectation were great.Ma was forced to study Chinese classics after school every day,and pressured to perfect his calligraphy.Ma's father also made him run daily to rid him of any laziness.

While Ma hated every minute of it,the experience did instill a certain discipline. He obtained a law degree from NYU and a doctorate from Harvard before returing to Taiwan to teach. There,at age 37,Ma became the former dictator's protege. The two shared a deeply held desire to reunite China and Taiwan under the banner of democracy.

Ma Knew that the first step was getting the two nations on speaking terms again.Using his legal expertise,he drafted what would become known as the "1992 Consensus",a masterpiece of diplomatic ambiguity. It declared there to be only "one China",but let both countries interpret the phrase however they pleased. The flexibleagreement opened up a dialogue with China that led to increased commerce between the two nations. It also helpd Ma gain a reputation as a savvy politician, which along with his general handsomeness, got him elected mayor of Taipei in 1998. (In a poll of Taipei women, asking which public figure they would most like to father their children,Ma was the resounding winner.)

Yet,mending fences with China would not prove simple.Ever since Taiwan became a democracy in 1987,there has been a sizable political movement to break away entirely.

After all,Taiwan is an open society that believes in free speech and civil liberties.

China,in spite of all its economic gains,is still rife with human rights violations, from Hong Kong to Tibet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 2000, Taiwan elected a pro-independence president, Chen Shui-bian, and diplomacy with China took a nosedive.

Both countries began saber-rattling and imposing financial restrictions on one another.

Their relationship took a turn for the ridiculous in 2005, when China offered Taiwan a goodwill gift of two pandas named Tuantuan and YuanYuan—a play on the Chinese word for reunion, Taiwan officially rejected them.

As trade between the two countries waned,Taiwan's economy grew sluggish. Taiwan's ties with the United States also became strained because the American government didn't want to be dragged into a conflict with China.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reunited,and it feels so good

On March 22,2008,Ma Ying-jeou was elected president of Taiwan by a wide margin, after campaigning on the idea of a "Great China market".Modeled after the European Union,it would allow the free movement of goods and capital and encourage tourism between nations.

In his inauguration speech,Ma reaffirmed his belief in the fantastically vague concept of "one China",and Taiwan's relationship with China improved almost immediately.

Ma was able to sign a series of agreements that increased trade and investment across the Taiwan Strait, opening up vital parts of Taiwan's service and manufacturing sectors to Chinese investor.

Even more dramatically,Ma passed legislation to make air travel between the nations possible.

On July 4,2008,a commercial airplane brought passengers directly from China to Taiwan for the first time in nearly 60 years.

Now about 3,000 Chinese tourists arrive to invade Taipei's shopping malls each day.

Also When China offered Taiwan the pandas Tuantuan and Yuanyuan agian,President Ma gladly accepted them.

Improved relations with China have also translated into improved relations with the United States. Now that China and Taiwan as a safe place to invest their money.

Unfortunately,Ma assumed office just as his country began to fell the effects of the global economic downturn.(In the first quarter of 2009,Taiwan's economy shrank by a record 10.2 percent from a year earlier.)

But many economists believe that, with money pouring in from both China and the United States,Taiwan maybe on the road to recovery.

Will Ma dream come ture? Will China and Taiwan ever reunite under the banner of democracy? Many foreign affairs experts would tell Ma to keep dreaming.

But 25 year ago, these two countries weren't talking at all; and today, they're giving each other pandas.Anything is possible.

I want to, but I can't.

"Everything is possibble"

Many foreign affairs experts would tell Ma to keep dreaming,這可以有兩種可能的解釋:

But 25 year ago, these two countries weren't talking at all; and today, they're giving each other pandas.Anything is possible.

What a mess
The fluid meaning of 'meltdown'
By Jan Freeman
September 21, 2008

It's a collapse, a crunch, a slide, a plunge, a rout, a quake. In the most general and judicious term, it's a crisis - that Greek-derived word for "decision point" that carefully withholds judgment about whether the patient will recover or die.

But the most picturesque and widely used word for the economic shocks of the past week is one so new that we didn't have it the last time we really needed it, during the Great Depression: meltdown.

You might have guessed, plausibly, that meltdown would be an old word - that people would have taken the verb phrase, to melt down, and made it a noun back when they came up with, say, breakdown (1832) or holdup (1837), similar words compounded from Old English parts.

But no: Though the word was used in the 1920s and '30s, it wasn't applied to economic troubles; it was a technical term among ice cream makers. The Oxford English Dictionary traces it to a 1937 mention in the Ice Cream Trade Journal, discussing additives that improve the treat's texture: "The Sod[ium] Alg[inate] ice cream melts down cleanly in the mouth... Due to the clean melt-down...a cooler sensation results in the mouth than with gelatin ice cream."

And Google Books, though its dating can be iffy, finds the same ice cream application 11 years earlier, in volume I of Jerome Alexander's "Colloidal Chemistry": "In the matter of melt-down and aging, the alginate has some advantage over gelatin," providing a "smoother and cleaner melt-down."

As a verb, not surprisingly, melt down was known - literally and figuratively - long before chemists started adding algae extracts to our ice cream. In 1599, the playwright Henry Porter had a character observe, "Her wit's a sun, that melts him down like butter." Shakespeare's "Timon of Athens" tells another character that given the opportunity, "Thou would'st have . . . melted down thy youth/ In different beds of Lust." And in the literal realm, we hear of tumors that melt down, as well as deer fat, church bronzes, and family silver.

But it wasn't till the 1950s that the notion of melting down, both as verb and noun, got its modern, nuclear-fueled punch. "A small experimental operation of a fast-breeder type reactor 'melted down' in Arco, Idaho, last November," reported Science in 1956, and Nucleonics commented on an "EBR-1 fuel meltdown."

These days, that would be more than enough propellant to boost a word into the media spotlight. But not in the buttoned-up '50s; the combination of Cold War sobriety and awe at the new nuclear danger seems to have kept meltdown on the shelf, and out of the everyday figurative lexicon, for a couple of decades.

In 1979, though, events conspired to launch meltdown upon its wide-ranging metaphorical career. The nuclear-catastrophe movie "The China Syndrome," was followed, in a matter of weeks, by a real nuclear accident at the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania. One burger joint in the threatened area renamed its cheeseburger "the Meltdown" - a signal that the word was escaping into jokey-ironic territory.

And in May of that year, The Washington Post applied the word to the Red Sox collapse in the first game of the season against the Yankees: "This Invasion of the Pennant Snatchers fulfilled every Boston nightmare. It was the hated Yankee Syndrome in full meltdown."

There was no stopping the spread of meltdown. In a 1981 book review in The New York Times, Christopher Lehmann-Haupt described a fictional character's "emotional meltdown." Soon toddlers' tantrums and lovers' breakdowns were being called meltdowns, with no need for the modifying "emotional."

In 1986, The Washington Post reported a now-familiar scenario: Hundreds of banks and insurance companies had banded together to bail out companies holding bad mortgage debt, fearing a "meltdown" that would spread to the nation's mortgage markets.

And in 1989, just a decade after Three Mile Island, we were introduced to Homer Simpson, safety inspector at the thoroughly poisonous, comically hazardous Springfield nuclear power plant.

Meltdown has been in widespread figurative use ever since, to mean - in the OED's definition - "Any uncontrolled and usually disastrous event with far-reaching consequences; a sudden and decisive collapse"; and in the financial world, "a rapid drop in the value of a currency, assets, shares, etc.; a crash."

But that explosion of popularity has left meltdown in something of a puddle, sensewise. When we've spent two decades using the word for tantrums and tennis losses and Britney Spears's troubles, what do we think when we read headlines referring to last week's "Meltdown Monday"? Does that meltdown sound like a world-changing catastrophe, or a mere ice cream liquidity issue? Meltdown may be more picturesque than crisis, but in a mere two decades, we've made it just as ambiguous.

1

I didn't go through the whole thing, just the beginning and I found "economic meltdown" being translated into "經濟大熔爐" and "unlikely leaders" into "靠不住的領袖" (and the red mark is not mine).
This is hilarious.  You just can't make up things like that.

2

[非凡領袖] should probably be [extraordinary leaders].  [unlikely leaders] is as 鴨湯 explained.  This is why it is so difficult to translate even ordinary phrases.  The difficulty just multiplies with humor and poetry.

to make difficult and unpopular decisions.

un·likely (-līk)

adjective

  1. not likely to happen or be true; improbable
  2. not likely to succeed; not promising

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
https://city.udn.com/57666/3591085?tpno=0&raid=3614119&cate_no=0#rep3614119
