英文時態最被誤解、誤用的莫過於現在完成式，常被當成 "已經" 解釋，然而，許多英文完成式並無「已經」的意思，譬如:

Cell phones have been a big part of many people’s lives since their first introduction in the 1990s.

再看下面這句新聞英文:

Last Thursday Assistant Secretary Danny Russel backed away from the "six assurances" that for decades have been the pillars of U.S. policy toward Taiwan.

”for” 或 ”since” 帶出的完成式表示從過去以來、好一陣子。缺少這些橫跨不同時間帶的副詞，現在完成式就不成立。因此，正式寫作(如考試)很難得在一段的開始用現在完成式，除非該句加上 ”for” 或 ”since”。

在英文句中，最常出現完成式用法如下:

Where has everybody gone?

你會怎麼翻譯這句? 最貼近的中文可能是"人都去哪裡了?"

這句話暗示之前所有的人都在，但現在不見了，橫跨過去與現在兩個時間帶，這是完成式成立的第二個的必要條件，也就是說，你必須在前一句(或前一段)交代過去，才可能後句(或下一段開頭)導出完成時態。看下面這句新聞英文:

These assurances—along with the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act and a set of three U.S.-China diplomatic communiqués—have helped Taiwan grow rich and democratic despite being increasingly vulnerable to aggression from a rising China. So it would seem wise for the Administration simply to reaffirm the policy.

一開始就用完成式，表示作者在前段已提到相關要點(“six assurances”)，這段延伸該要點在目前的情況或發展(“have helped Taiwan grow…”)。

在商業mail往來，若想表示下面劃線部分:

我們已經收到了貴公司寄來的文件, 經過公司內部會議討論後, 將會儘快給您回覆我們公司的立場及意見。

是這樣寫嗎？

We already received your document.

或

We have already received your document.

分析:

只是想表達「已收到、已寄出」，尤其加上過去時間，自然是用簡單過去式，而非完成式，因為，你不會從過去到現在一直收到對方只寄來一次的資料。例如:

I received your email of April 4.

或

Thank you for your email of April 4.

不過，也可以用現在完成式，但意思強調「剛剛、不久之前」，非常適合用在回覆對方的要求或交辦事項，可以加上過去時間(劃線部份)。例如:

We have just sent you the payment.

或

We have sent you the payment this morning.

所以，我們已經收到了貴公司寄來的文件可以直接用過去式，並省略 already:

We received your document.
