At the age of 15, Shah Jahan, the favorite son of the Mughal Emperor of India, was arranged to be married to a young girl of Persian nobility named Arjumand Banu. His love for her was so great that he changed her name to Mumtaz Mahal, which means the chosen one of the palace. When they came of age, the two were married and rarely spent a moment apart. Sadly, however, their time together was not meant to last.
While in labor with their 14th child, Mumtaz Mahal died due to difficulties during childbirth. In honor of her memory, Jahan began the biggest building project of the age. An army of elephants dragged tons upon tons of white marble 400 kilometers to the building site. There, more than 20,000 craftsmen and workers shaped and constructed the monument that would become the Taj Mahal.
