People who watch three or more hours of television daily may be twice as likely to die prematurely than people who watch less, according to a study on Wednesday.

The research in the Journal of the American Heart Association is the latest to describe the potential dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, which include high blood pressure, obesity, cancer and heart disease.

"Our findings are consistent with a range of previous studies where time spent watching television was linked to mortality," said lead author Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez, chair of the department of public health at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain.

The research was based on records from more than 13,000 people who had graduated from Spanish universities. Their average age was 37, and 60 percent were women.

Researchers wanted to find out if there was any link between dying young and the amount of television watched.

A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to 23 years behind bars for fatally shooting a retired police dog during a burglary.

Ivins Rosier was convicted in May for breaking into the Florida home of a trooper and shooting the officer’s five-year-old German Shepherd two years ago. Drake, a former drug-sniffing dog, was euthanized five days later.

艾文斯．羅齊爾2年前闖入佛州一名警官住家，並射殺警官領養的5歲大德國牧羊犬，於5月間被判處有罪。前緝毒犬德瑞克5天後遭安樂死。

Rosier, who was 16 at the time of the incident but tried as an adult, was sentenced on Friday on charges of animal cruelty and armed.

Circuit Judge Robin Rosenberg said she handed Rosier a tough sentence as she was bound by sentencing guidelines. Rosier was one of three teens who broke into Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Boody’s home on November 18, 2012. He confessed to police he was the one who shot the dog.

On April 2, NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover drove the last 98 feet needed to arrive at a site planned since 2013 as a destination for studying rock clues about ancient environments that may have been favorable for life.

Singapore has enlisted a drag queen comedian to give its people grammar lessons, as part of a long-running drive to encourage the correct use of English, for fear that weak language skills could dent its reputation as a business hub.

Russia and Western powers are on the brink of a new Cold War over the crisis in Ukraine, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview broadcast Tuesday.

Talia Maselli reached out to Biden last fall, knowing his dance card likely would fill up.

Biden sent a handwritten card and a corsage - baby’s breath, white roses and red, white and blue ribbons. Biden’s office says he was touched by the invitation and personally picked out the corsage so Maselli would feel special.

Women who often indulge their cravings for hamburgers, steaks and other red meat may have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer, a new study suggests.

Doctors have long warned that a diet loaded with red meat is linked to cancers including those of the colon and pancreas, but there has been less evidence for its role in breast cancer. Indonesia has for the first time surpassed Brazil in clearing tropical forests and losses are accelerating despite a 2011 moratorium meant to protect wildlife and combat climate change, scientists said.

Indonesia’s losses of virgin forests totaled 60,000 sq kms - an area almost as big as Ireland - from 2000-12, partly to make way for palm oil plantations and other farms, a study said. And the pace of losses has increased.

An elderly woman burnt herself to death this early morning at the entrance gate of Ho Chi Minh City Reunification Palace to protest China’s encroachment of Vietnamese waters in the East Vietnam Sea.

一名中年婦女清晨在胡志明市的統一宮入口處自焚身亡，以抗議中國在東越南海對越南海域的侵犯。

The woman was identified as Le Thi Tuyet Mai, 67, residing on Bui Dinh Tuy Street in Ward 24, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, according to Le Truong Hai Hieu – deputy chairman of the People’s Committee of HCMC’s District 1.

該婦女是67歲的黎氏雪梅，住在胡志明市平盛郡24區裴廷粹街，胡志明市第一區人民委員會副主席黎張海孝說。

Hieu added that the woman killed herself for feeling angry at the China’s illegitimate placement of its drilling rig in the Vietnamese waters.

Before killing herself, she placed six handwritten slogans with phrases to protest China.
