How The Tides Helped To Erect The Kwan-tu Bridge

Besides having very important functions in transportation, the Kwan-tu Bridge is a unique bridge.

It is unique in several ways.

First, it is an unusually beautiful bridge.

Unlike most other bridges in Taiwan, its three huge steel arches, which make up the main bridge, are bright red in color.

With these arches and its five spans stretching across the Tam-sui River, this bridge is a beautiful sight against the nearby mountains and the blue sky.

Second, except for a few kinds of special material, all the steel needed (about 6,000 metric tons) was locally produced.

Third, the building of this bridge required an unusually high standard of high-tech precision.

For example, the welding of the steel parts was mostly done automatically by machine.

But the most interesting of all these unique features is that the tides were the most helpful "tool" during the erection of the arches.

Let us see how these steel arches were put in the right places.

The parts of the bridge were connected by welding.

Then these welded parts were joined together to form three major blocks for erection.

As we can see from Figure 1 below, each block includes one arch and some other structures.

To erect a block means to put it in the right place.

The arches had to be placed on the piers.

Theoretically speaking, only a crane was needed to lift up the block and put it on the piers.

But things were not so simple.

On the one hand, each block weighed about 1500 to 2000 tons.

This means that an unusually powerful crane was needed.

On the other hand, the job had to be done in the middle of the river.

Equipment which could handle a job like this was only available in Japan or the United States.

To rent such equipment was extremely expensive and to transport it to the erection site was time-consuming.

In order to save time and money, our engineers decided not to rent such equipment from other countries and finally came up with the idea of using the tides to help them erect the blocks.

Let us take Block I as an illustration.

The parts were assembled on two barges which were linked together and served as floating docks.

Each barge had a 6000-ton capacity.

After all the parts that made up Block I were joined together, the block was moved to the site at high tide.

Figure 2 illustrates the situation.

A was to be placed onto A', and B onto B'.

A點預定放在AI之上,而B點放在BI之上。

At high tide A and B were above A' and B'.

在漲潮時,A點與B點在AI與BI之上,

Then, as the river went down at low tide, the barges also went down and the whole structure of Block I was placed directly and precisely onto the right piers.

This is illustrated in Figure 3 below.

After Block I was erected, Blocks II and III were erected by the same method.

In this way a huge amount of money and a great deal of time were saved.

This fact is both interesting and significant.

It shows that our engineers have the ingenuity to make creative use of every available means in doing their job.

As we learn from what is said above, making use of the tides was not the only way to erect the arches of the Kwan-tu Bridge; but it was definitely a very clever, practicable, and economical one.
