Samsung's New LPDDR2 and GDDR5 Promote Green Computing

Though Samsung's 'Green Memory' initiative has, so far, been more or less limited to the company's DRAM and SSD products, the hardware maker has now announced that it has expanded it to include its most recent LPDDR2 and GDDR5 green memory.

Samsung decided it would try to increase consumer interest in Green IT when it set up its 'Green Memory' initiative.

This Green initiative has been in effect since the middle of 2009 and seeks to increase the industry's awareness of high-quality memory that focuses on both performance and energy efficiency.

For a while, having DRAM and SSDs as the focus of this initiative was sufficient, but other types of memory have begun to grow in popularity.

Thus, the outfit has now expanded said project to include not only GreenDDR3 and Green SSDs, but also its GDDR5 and LPDDR2.

Samsung even set up a new website dedicated to boost worldwide interest in power-efficient technologies.

What the website contains is information on the 40nm-class GDDR5, used in graphics cards, as well as on 40nm LPDDR2 (for mobile applications) and 30nm-based DDR3 DRAM and NAND Flash memory.

“Intent on making information about our power-saving efforts more accessible not only to key manufacturing customers but also to consumers, we have created an extensive ‘Green Memory’ hub website,” said Dong-Soo Jun, executive vice president, Memory Sales and Marketing, Samsung Electronics.

“We believe that given adequate knowledge about the energy-saving advantages of ‘Green Memory’ solutions, and their inherent economic benefits, a growing number of end users will choose to buy Green IT products that use Samsung green memory,” the Samsung official added.

Finally, the website holds information on co-promotional activities with AM, Cisco, Fujitsu, HP, Intel, IBM, Microsoft and VMware, among others, all of them being partners to the Samsung Green initiative.
