1640: Gabriel Boughton, an English surgeon, effects a royal cure and the fee asked for and granted by Shah Jahan was free trade in Bengal.
1686: British abandon Hugli, their trading post 38 km from present day Calcutta and move downstream to three small villages - Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikata led by Job Charnok, an English merchant.
1696: First fort built at Dalhousie Square (present day BBD Bag)
1756: Siraj-ud-daula, Nawab of Murshidabad captures Calcutta.
British soldiers are packed in a cellar where most suffocate in what came to be known as "the black hole of Calcutta."
1757: The British, under Robert Clive, recapture Kolkata and make peace with the nawab who is later killed in the Battle of Plassey. Calcutta made capital of British India.
