This is the 2nd Picture Of My Durga Puja Festival Series which will End with Kali Puja Festival Series In November...
I will be posting my usual pics also along with the series...
This Picture is taken in Kumartuli (Kolkata)

According to the narrative from the Devi Mahatmya of the Markandeya Purana, the form of Durga (The Demon Slayer) was created as a warrior goddess to fight a demon. The demon's father Rambha, king of the demons, once fell in love with a water buffalo, and Mahishasur was born out of this union. He is therefore able to change between human and buffalo form at will (mahisha means "buffalo"). Through intense prayers to Brahma, Mahishasura had the boon that he could not be defeated by any man or god. He unleashed a reign of terror on earth, heaven and the nether worlds.

Eventually, since only a woman could kill him, the trinity bestowed a dazzling beam of energy upon the Goddess Trinity (Laxmi, Parvati and Saraswati), transforming her into the goddess, Durga. Her form was blindingly beautiful with three lotus-like eyes, ten powerful hands, lush black hair with beautiful curls, a red-golden glow from her skin and a quarter moon on her forehead. She wore a shiny oceanic blue attire emitting fierce rays. Her ornaments were carved beautifully of gold, with ocean pearls and precious stones embedded in it. Her face was sculpted by Shiva, torso by Indra, breasts by Chandra (the moon), teeth by Brahma, bottom by the Earth, thighs and knees by Varuna (water), and her three eyes by Agni (fire). Each god also gave her their own most powerful weapons, Rudra's trident, Vishnu's discus, Indra's thunderbolt, Brahma's kamandal, Kuber's gada, etc. Himalayas gifted her a fierce whitish golden lion. On the end of the 8th and beginning of the 9th day of waxing moon, Chanda and Munda came to fight the goddess. She turned blue with anger and goddess Chamunda leaped out of her third eye. Her form was the most powerful one with 3 red eyes, blood-filled tongue and dark skin; who finally killed the twin demons with her sword. This form of the divine goddess is worshipped during the sandhikshan of Durga Puja festival, as sandhi/chandi puja. Finally on the tenth day of waxing moon, goddess Durga killed Mahishasura with her trident.

Takshall St, Calcutta.
Part of a vast red brick building immediately to the west of the GPO and built in the Italianate style which was popular amongst British colonial architects in India as it allowed a European style building to be adapted to local conditions - making use of arcaded verandahs, loggias and high ceilings.

Grand Opera House - Calcutta - 1906

Lindsay St, Calcutta.
Located immediately opposite Hogg New Market, the original wooden Opera House was established in 1827. Sold in 1906 to an EM Cohen, it was rebuilt and renamed the Grand Opera House. Cohen promoted it as the top venue in Calcutta for touring vaudeville acts.

Later renamed the Globe Theatre, it provided entertainment to Allied troops stationed in Calcutta during WWII. It later became the Globe Cinema but being a single screen theatre, it could not compete with modern multiplex cinemas and it is now used by retailers.

Sir Stuart Saunders Hogg Market, Kolkata - India

Sir Stuart Saunders Hogg was an English civil servant in the Indian Civil Services of British India. He was born in 1833 to Sir James Hogg, formerly a director of the British East India Company and the Registrar of the Calcutta High Court. In 1853, at the age of twenty, Stuart Hogg entered the Indian Civil Services. During the Sepoy Mutiny, he was posted in the Punjab. Later, he joined the Bengal government as the Police Commissioner of Calcutta where he established the Detective Department. From 1863 to 1877 he was the Chairman of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. In 1875 he was knighted.
New Market, Calcutta, an upscale market that he founded, was named Sir Stuart Hogg Market in 1903 in his honor. It is still often referred to as Hogg's Market.

Strand Warehouse - Calcutta - 1902

Strand Rd, Calcutta.
This is one of a number of Victorian brick warehouses along Strand Road which line the right bank of the Hooghly River. These were used to warehouse jute - a main export from this part of Bengal. This warehouse (or 'godown' to use the Anglo-Indian terminology) and its neighbour, the Canning Warehouse, are both in a derelict state.

Over the years, there has been much talk about regenerating these old buildings (even calling in experts from London which has seen many successful warehouse regeneration projects in Docklands) but very little has come out of these meetings. The Strand Warehouse is especially ornate and it would be a great shame to allow it to crumble into a greater state of disrepair.

Update: 31 May 2010. Although derelict the building caught fire in February 2010 which caused the already fragile building to weaken further. A partial collapse of the building in late May 2010 caused 3 fatalities and signed the building's death warrant. The Calcutta Municipal Council has carried out its order to demolish this once majestic reminder of Calcutta's river port.

Howrah Station - Calcutta - 1905

Station Rd, Howrah.
Originally part of the East Indian Railway and located on the western bank of the Hooghly, Howrah is Calcutta's gateway to the rest of India.

Designed by English architect Halsey Ricardo (who never visited Calcutta!), this redbrick station is the second oldest railway building in India. Architecturally, some commentators have said it is in the Romanesque style. However, its functional appearance cannot compare with the glorious riot that is Bombay's Victoria Terminus. Local artist Rathin Mitra even stated that Howrah Station "is not a pleasant structure" with suggestions of "a Tibetan monastery and an English penitentiary".

The University of Pennsylvania online library has a fascinating set of photographs taken of Calcutta in 1945-6 by American servicemen stationed there during WWII. A photo of Howrah Station can be seen at:-

The Howrah Bridge

The Howrah Bridge spans the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. It was originally named the New Howrah Bridge because it links the city of Howrah to its twin city, Kolkata (Calcutta). On 14 June 1965 it was renamed Rabindra Setu, after Rabindranath Tagore a great poet and Nobel laureate. However it is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge.

The bridge is one of three on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. Apart from bearing the stormy weather of the Bay of Bengal region, it successfully bears the weight of a daily traffic of approximately 150,000 vehicles and 4,000,000 pedestrians. It is one of the longest bridges of its type in the world.

It is technically a cantilever truss bridge, constructed entirely by riveting, without nuts or bolts. It is currently used as a road bridge, but previously had a tram route as well.

The bridge is a toll bridge for all vehicles. It is one of the longest bridges of its type in India and one of the longest in Asia.

Wesleyan Methodist Church Parsonage - Calcutta - 1866

The Wesleyan Church Hall is immediately adjacent. This is a good example of the type of British residence of the era; high ceilings and windows on all sides for ventilation. The porte-cochere provided cover from Calcutta's oppressive heat and the monsoon rains. Sadly, since this photo was taken, this old building has been demolished.

Calcutta was the last remaining city in the world where the rickshaw was used. Whilst the West Bengal Govt has recently issued an edict banning the use of rickshaws, the 18,000 rickshaw wallahs themselves insist that they be allowed to provide their services. Illustrating the poverty which is prevalent along this street, the plastic sheet provides cover for a street sleeper.

Q: Can any Kolkata resident clarify the status of rickshaws today? Are they still on the streets?
