Dear Friends, Here’s some good news worth sharing. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took a step in the right direction Monday, voting to begin closing loopholes that broadcasters have used for years to cut costs and shortchange viewers hungry for local news. And that’s no April Fool joke! The loopholes allow broadcasters to combine newsrooms and air duplicate newscasts on multiple channels in the name of "economic efficiency." In so doing, they effectively permit one broadcaster with one editorial viewpoint to control multiple stations. That undermines local democracy, which thrives on a marketplace of ideas and an informed electorate. Common Cause -- with your help -- has been urging the FCC to rein in media monopolists for years, so the vote demonstrates the continuing power of citizen action. But there is still much for the FCC to do - including stopping the proposed Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger , guaranteeing net neutrality, and making political ad disclosure a reality. Stay tuned.
