Congressman Brad Sherman: Report to the San Fernando Valley

Reminder: Congressman Sherman will host a Town Hall Meeting, Sunday, April 1st at Birmingham High School. See details below.

Congressman Sherman Preserving Valley Jobs

Jobs & the Economy

America’s trade deficit undermines our position in the world and deprives Americans of millions of jobs.  This imbalance also lowers wages nationwide, while further indebting us to foreign countries.  The United States has a $300 billion trade deficit with China alone.  Congressman Sherman has worked to create more jobs here at home, rather than overseas.  He opposed NAFTA and CAFTA and led the opposition to the job-killing “free trade agreements,” Congress considered recently.  Sherman also introduced legislation – The Emergency China Trade Act- that will strip China of its preferential access to our markets unless it ends unfair practices that lead to its lopsided trade relationship with the United States.  If we had balanced trade with China right now, our unemployment rate would be under 5 percent.

Improving Transportation

Congressman Sherman has worked to improve local roads, highways and transit services which not only alleviates congestion throughout the San Fernando Valley, but helps boost the local economy.  Infrastructure projects create local job opportunities, lower fuel consumption, and reduce traffic in highly congested areas.  Brad Sherman secured federal funds that are now being used to build an additional lane on the 405 freeway through the Sepulveda Pass, and to build two additional lanes (one in each direction) on the Valley portion of the 5 freeway.  Sherman also secured federal funds for the Orange Line.  The Orange Line is now being extended north to Chatsworth; completion is expected this summer.

Scaling Back Our Involvement in Afghanistan & Iraq

As a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Sherman opposed the surges in both Iraq and Afghanistan.  He also supported President Obama’s decision to pull all combat troops out of Iraq by the end of 2011, and believes we should rapidly reduce our presence in Afghanistan down to a small counterterrorism force.

It has long been time to reduce our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan.  To date we have spent roughly 1.3 trillion dollars on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Since 2006, Sherman has consistently voted in favor of reducing the number of troops and spending in both wars.

Assistance on Refinancing and Foreclosure Avoidance

On February 18th, Congressman Sherman hosted a seminar on Refinancing, Home Purchasing and Foreclosure Avoidance for over 300 Valley residents.

Mortgage rates are at historic lows and many homeowners want to refinance their loans to reduce their monthly payments by hundreds or even thousands of dollars.  But many of the homeowners who attended Sherman’s seminar did not have the 20 percent equity often required to refinance.

Congressman Sherman told these residents about the HOME Act, which he cosponsored, which allows many valley residents to refinance – even if they have low-equity in their home or if they owe more than their home is currently worth.  The program operates at no cost to the federal government.

The seminar also covered how Valley residents can avoid foreclosure and how Congressman Sherman’s staff can help.  If you are interested in refinancing your home, or are seeking to avoid foreclosure, you can get much of the information from Sherman’s February seminar by visitingbradsherman.house.gov/homefinance or call us at (818) 501-9200

No Tax Havens for Off-Shoring Jobs

Current tax law creates incentives for job-creation overseas.  Multinational corporations manufacture products in foreign countries, sell those products here, and pay no taxes by using tax havens like the Cayman Islands.  Congressman Sherman cosponsored legislation that will close these loopholes, the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act

Sherman also believes American employers should receive a tax break when they create jobs here in the United States.  That is why he supports the American Jobs Act of 2011, to provide tax incentives for companies that hire Americans. The American Jobs Act also offers a clear plan to rebuild and reinvest in American infrastructure, strengthen small business and grow our nation’s economy.
