New Law in the US to Protect Against Cyber Crime
A new law was signed by the US federal government last week that increases the penalties for hacking into computers and participating in cyber crimes. Called the Identity Theft Enforcement and Restitution Act, this law now makes it a felony to damage ten or more protected computers used by the federal government or a financial institution. Under this new law, criminals can be prosecuted for these crimes even if no damages have been claimed. In addition, if damages such as identity theft is claimed, then the identity thief can be ordered to pay restitution not only for the damages incurred but also for the time spent by the victim trying to correct the damage done.
