Hundreds of Taiwanese feared dead
Hundreds of people are feared to have died after a landslide（山崩） caused by Typhoon Morakot swept into a southern mountain village.
The typhoon struck Taiwan at the weekend, dumping record amounts of rain and washing out（沖走）roads and bridges. Rescue workers（搜救人員） have been trying to find survivors in Hsiaolin （小林）and surrounding villages but the military（軍方）says more than 700 are trapped（陷入困境的）and possibly dead. Helicopters（直昇機） have been dropping rescuers（救援者） into the village of Hsiaolin, in the mountains of southern Taiwan, and winching （用絞盤吊拉）out residents, trapped for several days by landslides that have cut road access（通道） and buried many houses.
The storm also hit mainland China, where six people were reported killed. Two died when a landslide submerged（埋沒）a group of houses late on Monday. It was initially（最初）believed that the buildings were apartment blocks, with many families buried, but Chinese officials later confirmed（證實）that they were one-storey（樓層） homes which had mostly been evacuated（撤空） before the landslide.
