Brazil Move Could Boost Future Rafale Exports

Paris - Brazil's decision to open negotiations to buy 36 Rafales marks a turn in the export prospects of the strike fighter, sending a signal of political and commercial support for French industry, defense specialists said.
A successful conclusion to contract talks could mean Brazil will be the first foreign buyer of the Rafale from Dassault Aviation, which is in competition in India, Switzerland and Greece. Libya is in bilateral talks for the French-built combat aircraft.
The Rafale's competitors in Brazil's FX-2 fighter tender were Boeing's F/A-18E/F and the Saab Gripen NG.
The sale of 36 Rafales would be worth around five billion euros ($7.2 billion), said Eric Trappier, head of Dassault Aviation's military aircraft division.
"The presidents of Brazil and France have decided to be strategic partners equally in the aeronautic field, where the two countries have strong and complementary skills," a joint statement Sept. 7 from Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Nicolas Sarkozy said.
Trappier said the Rafale contract will be commercial and will take several months to conclude, as the talks would involve the Brazilian Air Force and local industry, which would play an important part in the acquisition.
