A: Roughly speaking, there are two kinds of investments. One type runs the risk of losing some of your capital for greater income. The other type yields only modest growth while your original capital remains intact. Choosing between two types of investments is often referred to as the risk versus reward dilemma.

B: I don’t want any investment that could incur a great loss. So I will purchase a certificate of deposit from a bank, if I have money I don’t need on hand. If you choose the automatic renewal option, your capital will keep growing without further effort. Naturally, you could cancel the renewal by contacting the bank during the grace period after your CD matures.

 

A：大概說起來，投資有兩種方式，一種是冒著可能損失部分資本的風險，追求較大的收益，另一種只能使資本產生適量的成長，但可以維持不致虧本。在這兩種投資類型當中選擇，常被稱為風險與報酬的兩難。

B：我不想做任何可能招致大量損失的投資，所以如果手上有不用的閒錢，我會放在銀行定存，要是選擇自動更新方案，你不用再做什麼，資金就會不斷成長。當然啦，在定存到期後的寬限期，你可以聯絡銀行解除更新契約。

CURRENCY各國貨幣

我們每天都會在報紙上，看到各國貨幣匯率波動的報導，但是看得懂，不代表說得出，下面列出了一些貨幣的口語說法，供作參考。

$1.75       one dollar seventy-five / a dollar seventy-five / one dollar seventy-five cents / a dollar and seventy-five cents （一美元75分）

￡2.40     two pounds forty / two pounds forty pence / two pounds and forty pence （2英鎊40便士）

?85.70     eighty five euros seventy / eighty five euros seventy cents （85歐元70分）

$275        two hundred and seventy-five dollars （275美元）

￡342,000,000        three hundred and forty-two million pounds （3億4千2百萬英鎊）

一美元用單數one dollar表示，二美元以上用複數two dollars，貨幣單位 (currency unit) 有複數形，使用時需注意。但也有的貨幣單位不分單複數，例如：

yen（日本的「圓」）

won（韓國的「圜」）

yuan（人民幣的「元」）

jiao, fen（人民幣的「角」、「分」，分別相當於一元的十分之一、百分之一）

也就是說，￥1是one yen，￥600是six hundred yen，無須加s。
