TaiNan Children's Literature Summer Camp 2011--Day 2
Sunday, August 14th, 2011
by Camilla Wu
When reading meets the culture, our lives are abundant and meaningful.

TaiNan Children’s Literature Summer Camp

by Amber Wu

We took high-speed railway to Tainan for our culture journey on August 13th, 2011. On the way to TaiNan, we spent time reading novels. I found that it was quite an enjoyment instead of doing nothing. The book Camilla assigned to me was “Lupin魯冰花.” Through this touching story, I realized that life is so vulnerable but precious. All we should do is dream bravely and cherish what we already have since we are blessed with so much luck and potential in our lifetime.

Finally we reached our destination, Tainan. We had our dinner at ChihKan Pedder’s Noodles. As I got inside, I could feel the traditional atmosphere surrounded us. All the items, decorations were classical as if we had bounced back to the past. One dish after another, Coffin Bread, Tan Tzai Noodles satisfied our stomachs. Afterwards, we took a walk at Chen Kung University. As a college student, I have to say that no wonder thousands of students are eager to enter it for its prominent performance and beautiful campus scenery.

The next day, we went to National Museum of Taiwan Literature. Everything attracted me a lot since it was my first visit. As I took a stroll inside, I could sense the wisdom and harmony filling this place that I had barely had the same feelings when I was in the city. The time we spent in the children’s literature area, I found a lovely book by Jimmy幾米. It stroke a right chord with me. Short descriptions and few words in the picture books can also mean a lot. Afterwards, we visited the agriculture area. This place is about showing people the importance of traditional value. After a string of culture learning, our stomachs were in need of real food as well. We had meatballs for our lunch. Every place has its own unique dishes. I guess that is the reason why the meatballs we had were not as good as we expected. However, we enjoyed our refreshing desserts at 晶晶fruits shop. Crowed scene and roaring order sounds showed its popularity and the passion nature of southern people. In the afternoon, we went visiting Confucius temple. Thanks for the tour lady, we learned a lot about the classical ceremony long time ago. Confucius once expressed the idea that teaching skills vary from person to person since we are all different individuals. I think this remark is blessed with all the teachers who devote their strength on teaching.

On the way home, we are all exhausted. While I was taking a nap, I was wondering why all the people nowadays slides their finger on the iphone screen whenever on the MRT or bus instead of turning the pages? It is sort of ironic that we strive for the high-tech but we almost forget the most natural way to attain the knowledge. Through flipping the page, smelling the fragrance of the paper, feeling the weight of the books as if holding the wisdom, we live a meaningful life. That is the reason why it is so important to build up a museum for conservation. Since we had the connection with the society, we keep learning. However, what we receive is just theory and merely the words on the paper. ‘’Knowledge without action is just like the snow on the hot stove.’’ We have to make it useful. In this trip, I learned a lesson to be a good observer. I appreciate all the people participating in this journey and gave me the chance to absorb the knowledge and experience I have never had before.
