Reading Club A – Knights of the Round Table / Robinson Crusoe -- 5

 Learning about Literature / Knights of the Round Table / Newspaper/ Robinson Crusoe

1.     Learning about Literature (based on What your fifth grader needs to know, p. 46)

a.        Review literal and figurative language.

b.        Define the word imagery:

1.      (a)Mental images collectively. (b)Figurative description or illustration. – Random House Webster’s Dictionary

2.      (a)Mental images. (b) The use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas. – The American Heritage Dictionary

3.      Descriptive language used by writers in poems, stories, etc. Similes and metaphors are both types of imagery. – Scholastic Children’s Dictionary

4.      The words writers use to create mental pictures and other imaginary sensations.

Example:

“Hills Like White Elephants.” – Ernest Hemingway

à The title of the book gives us a mental picture of hills in the distance.

c.         Simile: A figure of speech that compares unlike things but makes the comparison obvious by including the word “like” or “as.”

Example:

  She is as fast as lightning.

d.        Metaphor: A figure of speech that brings together unlike things without using “like” or “as.”

Example:

  He is a mule. à Simile: He is as stubborn as a mule.

2.     Knights of the Round Table

a.       Discuss the characters, the plots, and the scenes.

b.      Discuss the conflict.

c.       Reinforce the concepts of similes and metaphors.

3.     Newspaper

a.      The Daily of the University of Washington www.dailyuw.com

b.      The Wall Street Journal

c.       The Stranger

d.      Taipei Times 

    

 4.     Robinson Crusoe

 

 

a.       Group reading and role playing: Chapter One—Shipwreck!

b.      All the club members are required to finish reading Robinson Crusoe.
