1963年8月9日出生於紐澤西州紐華克市（Newark），有個福音界公認為最佳女歌手的媽媽西西休斯頓（Cissy Houston），及一個70年代開始以演唱「Walk On By」等暢銷金曲的表姐狄昂華薇克（Dionne Warwick），十一歲就在母親任職音樂牧師的新希望浸信禮教會少年唱詩班（New Hope Baptist Junior Choir）的福音樂團活絡靈魂樂的唱法，從小在音樂環境下成長的惠妮休斯頓，年輕時即為夏卡康（Chaka Khan）、路勞爾斯（Lou Rawls）擔任錄音室合聲歌手，還經常陪著母親到紐約巡迴演唱，偶爾也登台唱幾首，芳齡十八則走入模特兒的伸展台，登上Glamour、Seventeen等雜誌的封面少女。

84年與節奏藍調靈魂樂的超級巨星泰迪潘德葛雷斯（Teddy Pendergrass）合唱一首「Hold Me」，讓積極實踐歌唱夢想的惠妮，終於踏出紮實的第一步。85年，Arista唱片公司的總裁克立夫戴維斯（Clive Davis）慧眼簽為旗下，當首張專輯『Whitney Houston』在樂壇投下一聲巨響的瞬間，惠妮註定要用她那經年唱詩班豐富的靈魂樂歌唱基礎所凝聚成的美麗人聲，為樂壇找回歌者唱歌的質感，沛然而真誠的情感更是她用以進入泛泛情愛人生的世界，找到詞曲所描述的情境空間，進而轉化成美麗的愛情歌聲故事。
