1984年，二十歲的Vanessa憑藉著青春美貌，榮登選美會的冠軍寶座，成為第一位黑人當選美國小姐，鋒頭正健，後由於被揭發曾替成人雜誌拍裸照而取消桂冠，並受到媒介的指責，輿論壓力。 Vanessa並沒有因此一蹶不振，她憑著漂亮的面孔，絕妙的身材，和一副極具實力的好歌喉開始向樂壇進軍。1988年，Vanessa推出第一張個人專輯《The Right Stuff》,在美國取得不俗成績。專輯中有四首單曲闖入BillboardTop 10， Vanessa還因此獲得葛萊美最佳新人獎提名。 1992年，Vanessa又推出第二張個人專輯《The ComfortZone》，這張專輯集合了Amy Grant、Keith Thomas等資深音樂人的才智，具有很高的水準。其中《Running B- ackTo You》率先沖進Billboard Top 10，接著一首《Save The Best ForLast》更是包括Billboard，美國成人音樂榜Soul Mus-ic榜的三料冠軍，成績相當驕人，這是一首抒情、優美的歌曲，聽來令人倍感飄逸。這張專輯中，歌曲類型向多元化發展，融合了Soul、R ＆B、Jazz、Classical、Ballat, Funk等各異的風格。 VanessaWilliams正以她成熟的音樂條件逐漸向樂壇一流歌手的方向發展。
