Robert: Wow, Jiufen is nice and quiet at night, totally different from the bustling and noisy crowds during the day! Kitty: Yeah, this place is always packed on weekends; it's totally commercialized. You can only experience its simple lifestyle from the old days during the night, after the tourists are gone.
Taike: But I think the winding old streets are still filled with plain and simple human culture. And the herbal cakes and taro balls are exceptional!
Robert: I thought the old Jinguashi mines that we visited this afternoon were something special. I actually felt a trace of sadness while visiting the Crown Prince Chalet and the ruins of the Gold Zen
Temple.
Taike: Hey, you've never been governed by Japan, so what are you all sad about
Robert: The brochure of the Gold Ecological Park said that during the period of Japanese colonization, all the gold mined from here was sent to Japan. Also, it's sad that Jiufen was prosperous because of a gold rush but then faded with the decline of gold mining activities.
Kitty: And the saddest part is that you were totally left out from this gold-digging business!
Taike: Well, perhaps this is why the film ”A City of Sadness” is such a sad movie.
Kitty: Sadness your ass! With so many tourists visiting here, the shop owners are thrilled to rake in all their money. Who in his right mind wouldn't be happy
