Abian himself does not have any background in handling the economy.
Actually, he is not interested in the economic issues.
When there is a middle class frustration after the bust of the tech bubble, resulting in a rise in unemployment and the recession, Abian simply has no ideas what to do...
He just let the Taiwanese economy drift up and down with the world economy. He blames the world economy, without noticing the fact that recession in USA and Japan actually create outsourcing opportunities for many Taiwanese companies.
Abian fails to provide a timely economic stiumlus package. In USA, the ruling party in the White House negotiates with the opposition party in the Congress to work out an economic package. After all, democracy is about the art of striking a compromise to make things happen. Abian simply lacks the ability to deliver such a leadership.
He fails to build an economic team that can run the show for him.
By contrast, the KMT government can provide this leadership, and can build the economic team for the people of Taiwan. Since the early 1950s, the past KMT government has successfully lifted the economic structure up one level on the technology ladders 5 decades in a row. During the 1970s, the KMT did not blame the oil crises; rather, their economic policy allows Taiwan to be among the first few economies in the world that pulled out of the stagflation (stagnation plus inflation) to resume the rapid growth. During the 1950s and 1960s, the KMT government pushed for fiscal reform, currency reform, trade reform, education reform, not to mention the well known land reform, to kick off the economic takeoff. In addition, the sustained rapid growth comes with balanced degree of income inequality.
The DPP tradition of lacking the ability to address the economic issues may be because the past ruling party KMT has done it all and done it well. This is why the DPP focused her attention on fighting for the political reforms, the black gold and other corruption. The DPP is a very good opposition party material when the KMT runs the economic show. To put Taiwan back on track, we need to put the blue camp back to the driver s seat, and let the DPP do what she can do best, namely, the best watchdog! This political balance will work again for the prosperity of Taiwan for another 5 decades in a row!

This election is about how to win the trust from the frustrated middle class and middle voters. They care more about their economic future. And, they want to see who can deliver more and better. Manipulation of the ideological referendum actually makes them feel that Abian does not address their concern.
