Those who served in Vietnam know that nearly all who were able to get in the Reserve components during that time did so to avoid duty in Vietnam. Obtaining a slot in the Guard or Reserves during the Vietnam era was nearly impossible because both were filled to capacity. Only those with power and influence could make a difference in who got in. The president's father met those qualifications.
