In the past, I enjoyed reading the articles of YST as he sometimes provides new viewpoint on some issues. Later on, I began to find he has much bias on some matters and some of the information in his articles is also incorrect. The Hong Kong issue is an example.
For example, he said HK could not live without the New Territories (NT). Actually, NT provides neither food nor natural resources to its population, why couldn’t HK live without its presence?
Also, please note that HK’s rise was commenced in 50s and 60s, not after the Economic Reform of China. During the 50s, with the influx of refugees as manpower resources, HK has developed its manufacturing industries. If you refer to relevant statistics, you could find that HK was the leading producers of textiles and plastic products in the 60s and 70s. Also, please note that the place of origins of raw materials and the market of the product was not the Mainland in that period.
He often said that the HK people are unpatriotic. I just wish to tell u: most HK people love China but have reservation about CCP. The reason was simple: The things that CCP done in the past. Tell u a story: I have heard from an elder that in a period of 1960s, corpses, who were victims of the Cultural revolution drifted into the Victoria Harbour EVERYDAY. At the same time, communists in HK placed bombs in the streets and killed many innocent people, including the children. Under the circumstances, what would the HK people think about Mainland?
I don’t know why YST always maliciously attack HK. Perhaps it’s out of his personal bad experience. Anyway, HK is a phoenix: It faced challenges and crisis once several years but, with its special spirit, it always renews and modifies itself afterwards. Looking down on HK will definitely be disappointed.
Economically, HK and China are mutually benefited. While taking advantages from the rise of China, HK also contributed much to China as it has brought the motherland with much capital, skills as well as new ideas and systems and it will continue doing so in the future. With this unique Pearl of the Orient, the Chinese crown will just become more and more beautiful.
Just wait and see.
