The Taylor Swift Economy Has Landed in Europe

, 06/21/24

LONDON — It’s not just
Taylor Swift fans keeping a close eye on her Eras Tour dates. One of Europe’s most prominent economists is acutely aware that the singer is spending the summer jetting between Europe’s stadiums.

Philip Lane, the chief economist at the European Central Bank, had the pop star on his mind when he spoke at an event Monday. The interviewer had asked him about the risk that stubborn inflation in the services sector could intensify, especially with Europe heading into a particularly busy summer with the Olympics in Paris and the Euro 2024 soccer championship in Germany.

“Well, that’s very interesting,” he said at the event. “You managed to say all that without saying Taylor Swift.”

Swift is touring Europe this summer, bringing in her wake hundreds of thousands of Swifties spending on airfare, hotels, restaurants and friendship bracelets. On Friday, she will perform the first of eight shows at London’s Wembley Stadium; about 700,000 people are expected to see the shows in the British capital. And analysts are debating the economic footprint it will leave.

Economists in the United States know that Eras is an economic tour de force. As consumers splurged on concerts, meals, vacations and other recreational experiences they missed out on during pandemic lockdowns, one company estimated that the tour could generate $4.6 billion in North America alone from spending on tickets, merchandise and travel.

Central bankers are justified in scrutinizing the potential inflationary effects of the arrival of a global superstar: In May last year, when Beyoncé kicked off her Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, an economist attributed a blip in the inflation data to the singer’s concert, as fans traveled from afar to witness the first show.

Europe’s central banks have started to cut interest rates — or are poised to — as inflation has slowed substantially over the past year, putting their 2% target rates within sight. But there are lingering concerns that inflationary pressures have not been stamped out because price gains for services, which include hotels and restaurants, are repeatedly higher than expected.

The demand that the Eras Tour creates for hotel rooms and flights across Europe could push up prices that feed into each country’s inflation rate. Central bankers are sensitive to even minute changes in the data as they try to distinguish one-off effects from lasting ones. If central bankers worry that inflation is not slowing as expected, they could hold off cutting rates.

“All those tiny quirks are going to matter a lot,” said Lucas Krishan, a strategist at TD Securities in London. They can “muddle the picture for central banks heading into these decisions.”

Last month, Portugal’s inflation rate accelerated, in part because of a jump in hotel prices in Lisbon “resulting from a major cultural event,” the country’s statistics office said. Swift performed in Lisbon on May 24 and 25.

The impact that events like Swift’s tour have on inflation can be mitigated by how well a country’s economists anticipate the effect of her concerts so investors and others are not surprised by the data. Policymakers at the European Central Bank have said that the path back to 2% inflation will be “bumpy” and that a relatively strong tourism season is already baked into their forecasts.

But Krishan said it was possible that Swift's concerts in August, when the tour swings back through London, could increase services inflation in Britain, especially because one of her tour dates may coincide with the day that the nation’s statistics agency records price data. If hotel prices follow the pattern set when she played in Liverpool this month, services inflation could rise as much as 0.3 percentage points. Higher-than-expected inflation data in August could encourage Bank of England officials to hold off on cutting rates in September, Krishan said.

Other analysts are skeptical of Swift’s ability to have a seismic impact that shows up in national statistics.

“Taylor Swift is unlikely to be affecting central bank policy. She’s unlikely to be affecting government policy,” said George Moran, an economist at Nomura. “And I don’t think it’s a sustainable option for growth in a country to rely on having superstar concerts.”

Barclays predicted that Swift’s tour would lead to a bump of nearly 1 billion pounds ($1.3 billion) in the British economy, but those suggestions are hard to substantiate, Moran said, because no one knows how much people are diverting their spending from other activities. Even then, 1 billion pounds would not be enough to revitalize Britain’s stagnant economy.

Still, Moran added that for individual cities and certain sectors, the tour could have a meaningful impact. When tickets went on sale last summer, Airbnb searches in host cities increased more than 300% on average, the company said. The Greater London authority estimated that Swift’s eight London shows would generate 300 million pounds for the economy.

“The impact is going to be more local than macro,” Moran said. “Taylor Swift is obviously a massive phenomenon, and the areas that she’s visiting is causing a big buzz in the hospitality sector.”

The end of an era: How Taylor Swift boosted the US economy

Auzinea Bacon, CNN, 12/08/24

The concert tour that made Taylor Swift a billionaire wraps up this weekend, but it has already left a lasting impact on the global economy.

The pop superstar, whose
final performance of “The Eras Tour” takes place Sunday night at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia, emerged as a business titan after 152 concerts in 52 countries. Eras became the highest-grossing tour of all time with an estimated windfall of $2.2 billion.

In the United States, concertgoers spent
about as much as football fans spend for the Super Bowl — an average $1,300 on travel, hotels, food and merchandise, according to the US Travel Association. But the Super Bowl is just one game and has two weeks of marketing and promotion, while Swift’s tour hit 23 cities on 62 nights over the course of about five months.

Swifties spent an estimated $5 billion in the United States, according to an estimate by survey company Question Pro. But that total only takes into account direct spending, according to the US Travel Association, and could exceed $10 billion when factoring in indirect spending and when non-ticket holders make purchases outside of the venue.

‘Swiftnomics’ revives post-pandemic economies

That spending power was a part of the “Taylor Swift Effect,” which
travel industry analysts deemed a “hospitality phenomenon.

Downtown areas experienced higher traffic and occupancy rates due to the influx of visitors. Swift fans often extended their stays in cities that hosted multiple shows, which further boosted local revenue.

“These events have had a major revitalizing effect on local tourism industries and downtowns still struggling from the effects of the pandemic,” the California Center for Jobs & the Economy
reported.

unknown content item

Pittsburgh, which hosted two concerts, had its highest weekend occupancy at hotels post-pandemic and the second-highest weekend occupancy in its history. Swift’s tour raised the average daily cost of rooms to $309, and the city generated $46 million in direct spending from attendees, 83% of whom didn’t live in Allegheny County.

The California Center for Jobs & the Economy estimated that Swift’s six-night concert run in Los Angeles increased local employment by 3,300 workers and local earnings by $160 million. Before the “Eras” tour hit Los Angeles, hotel jobs were about 15% below their pre-pandemic highest. The US Travel Association estimated Los Angeles County would benefit from another $320 million, with $20 million in sales and local taxes and $9 million in hotel room taxes.

Eras was also a boon for ride-hailing companies. Lyft reported rides were up by an average of 8.2% in cities hosting a Swift concert and that New Orleans saw a 31% increase.

The New Orleans Downtown Development District estimated between
80-90% of concertgoers were visitors. Greater New Orleans, Inc. estimated the concerts’ economic impact to be around $200 million. That doesn’t account for spending at restaurants, hotels and other tourism expenses.

Here’s What We Know About Taylor Swift’s Net Worth as She Reaches a New Milestone

Rebecca Schneid, 10/06/24

Taylor Swift’s music career continues to be incredibly lucrative. On Saturday, Oct. 5, Forbes updated the singer’s net worth in light of this. The development comes after the massive success of Swift’s worldwide
record-breaking Eras Tour over the past year and a half. The tour is set to end in December.

The singer utilized the popularity of her tour, reaching even more fans through
releasing her concert movie, which is available to stream via Disney+. Swift bypassed studios and streamers for the film’s initial release, making a partnership with AMC, giving the theater chain its highest single-day ticket sales in history.

In addition to the Eras Tour, Swift’s 11th studio album,
The Tortured Poets Department, also debuted in April and became the first album in Spotify’s history to reach 300 million streams in a day. It broke multiple other records, including single-day Spotify album streams, single-week vinyl sales, and biggest streaming week of all time.

In 2023, Swift also earned herself the title of
TIME’s Person of the Year. She told TIME that she sees the monetary success of herself and fellow billionaire Beyoncé—and female artists in general—as an inflection point in the industry.

“What has existed since the dawn of time? A patriarchal society. What fuels a patriarchal society? Money, flow of revenue, the economy,” Swift said. “So actually, if we’re going to look at this in the most cynical way possible, feminine ideas becoming lucrative means that more female art will get made. It’s extremely heartening.”

Swift’s monetary rise also comes after she has spent the past few years re-recording and re-releasingTaylor’s Version” renditions of her former albums. This was prompted after Scooter Braun—a former heavyweight music manager—acquired Swift’s back catalog of music in 2019 after he acquired the Big Machine Label Group and all of its recorded music assets.

At the time, Swift
said of the acquisition: “This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept.” Braun then sold Swift’s Big Machine masters to Shamrock Capital in 2020. So far, Swift has re-released the albums Fearless (Taylor’s Version)Red (Taylor’s Version)Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), and 1989 (Taylor’s Version), for which she maintains the rights.

So, what is Swift's current net worth? Per Forbes' Oct. 5 update, the
singer’s net worth is now pegged at $1.6 billionForbes estimates that so far during 2024, Swift, 34, has grossed $1.15 billion before taxes and fees, with pretax earnings of $400 million.

Swift’s wealth breakdown differs from other celebrities in her sphere; she is the first musician to make the status of billionaire primarily on her songs and performances, according to Forbes. By comparison, Selena Gomez—who was recently
named on Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index—made the majority, roughly 81%, of her wealth through her cosmetics brand Rare Beauty. Music tours contributed to less than 5% of Gomez’s fortune, with album and record sales delivering less than 2%, according to the Bloomberg report. Similarly, singer Rihanna has an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion, which is due to the success of her popular cosmetics line Fenty Beauty, according to Forbes

Here’s How Much Taylor Swift Makes per Concert

Mandatory Editors, 10/17/24

Pop sensation Taylor Swift is currently making waves around the world due to her ongoing Eras Tour. The 34-year-old artist kicked off her sixth concert tour in March 2023 and will conclude it in December 2024. With the tour proving to be a monumental success, Swift’s fans are eager to know how much money she is taking in with each concert.

Here are all the available details regarding Taylor Swift’s recent concert earnings.

How much money does Taylor Swift make for each Eras Tour concert?

According to a report by
Forbes, the renowned singer earns approximately $13.6 million per concert.

Taylor Swift is widely regarded as the biggest pop star in the world at the moment. Considering her global fan following and the crowds she draws with her performances, there are few artists who can compete with her influence. Due to her massive earnings of late, Swift became a billionaire in 2023 and currently boasts an estimated net worth of
$1.3 billion. However, her Eras Tour seems to have boosted the musician’s wealth. It has already become the highest-grossing tour ever, becoming the first in history to cross the $1 billion revenue mark.

According to
Capital UK, Swift pocketed over $700 million in ticket sales through the North American leg of her tour. Moreover, she was reportedly paid £14 million to perform in Singapore during the South Asian sector of her world tour. Swift raked in close to £2.3 million per show to exclusively conduct her six concerts in the island nation.

The entirety of the Eras Tour comprises 152 concerts across five continents. As a result, Taylor Swift is expected to make in excess of $2 billion via ticket sales alone. If other factors, such as merchandise, are also taken into consideration, her total income with the Eras Tour is speculated to exceed $4.1 billion, as per a
Washington Post report.

記得有演唱會聽眾過於亢奮引發暴動的事件。音樂會導致個別弱勢族群感到眼紅或心生忌妒,而規劃攻擊,斷送自己未來;倒是第一次聽說。這些人大概沒聽過:

If you can’t beat them, join them!

如果不能融入與其悻悻然在暗處自怨自艾,何不搭個自己的舞台,唱自己的歌。有時這就是一顆新星誕生的時刻

Swifties unite on Vienna streets to sing, trade bracelets as 'Eras Tour' dates are canceled after thwarted terror attack

Taylor Swift's fans still came together, celebrating music and friendship.

Suzy Byrne, 08/10/24

Taylor Swift fans showed they could find light in a dark moment.

After the superstar’s Vienna “Eras Tour” concert dates were canceled due to a
thwarted terrorist attack, Swifties took to the streets there in an act of solidarity. They held sing-alongs, shared friendship bracelets and made love the real message by displaying lots of hand hearts.

On Aug. 8, which was supposed to be the first of Swift’s three tour dates at Ernst Happel Stadium, the venue was closed, but hundreds of fans consoled one another across the city. Officials had expected up to 65,000 fans inside the stadium for each of Swift’s concerts there and as many as 30,000 non-ticketed fans outside.

Videos posted to social media showed a sea of Swifties singing her hits, including “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” “All Too Well” and “Cruel Summer.” The mood included both tears over the situation and joy in the impromptu camaraderie.

One person who shared videos from the sing-along in Stephansplatz, in the center of Vienna, was comedian Nikki Glaser. “Sang ‘All Too Well’ with thousands of displaced Swifties in Vienna,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories along with a check emoji. While it was emotional — fans not just missing out on the show, but some losing money in expenses — Glaser wrote that the sing-alongs were “so fun.”

Swifties also gathered on a Vienna street called Corneliusgasse to “commiserate about the cancellations,” the Associated Press reported. The location was selected because it’s similar to “Cornelia Street,” the name of a track from Swift’s 2019 album Lover.

There were also people outside the stadium, where Swifties wrote messages on the ground in chalk. One read: “It’s been a long time but we’ll wait for Evermore.”

The celebrating continued on Aug. 9, which would have been night two of Swift’s trio of shows.

While there was disappointment in the air, the sound of music was a hopeful message. Fans threw up their heart-hands, the loving gesture Swift adopted long ago, making that the real takeaway.

There were
Swift bracelet trees, where fans displayed their beaded creations.

The friendship bracelets, a
signature of her concerts (inspired by lyrics from her 2022 album Midnights), continued to foster the spirit of community that her shows have.

Some
wore the Swift-inspired outfits that they planned to wear to the concert.

Swifties even made music on the streets.

Fans showed off their Swift apparel — and in some cases giant Tay tattoos.

Some also accepted the offerings of local businesses, which showed love to stranded Swifties by
giving them gifts. Fans with tickets could have a free burger at Le Burger or visit the Albertina Museum collection for free.

On Aug. 8,
a third suspect, an 18-year-old, was arrested. A 15-year-old was also brought in for questioning, but authorities don’t believe he planned the attack or intended to participate.

Swift has not yet addressed the apparent plot. Her tour dates at Wembley in London are proceeding as of now. Officials have said they're ramping up security.

This comes on the heels of three children in Southport, England, being
killed at a dance workshop celebrating her music in a small British seaside town in July. In a statement, Swift said she was “completely in shock” over it.
