Remembering Tiananmen 35 Years Later

Olivia Enos, 06/04/24

BEIJING - JUNE 5, 1989: (JAPAN OUT) (VIDEO CAPTURE) A lone demonstrator stands down a column of tanks June 5, 1989 at the entrance to Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The incident took place on the morning after Chinese troops fired upon pro-democracy students who had been protesting in the square since April 15, 1989. 35 years ago today, one Chinese man stared down eighteen PLA tanks in a brave stand for freedom and human rights in China.

That image remains forever seared in our collective imaginations as a visible representation of man’s deep and abiding desire for freedom and liberty.

The Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989 is believed to have taken as many as
10,000 Chinese lives. The massacre took place amidst student protests expressing their disgruntlement over the slow pace of reforms and mourning the sudden death of Hu Yaobang, an economic reformer and acolyte of Deng Xiaoping who was ousted from his prior post as general secretary of the Communist Party prior to his death.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) views protests as inherently destabilizing – a threat to the Party’s rule and reign. Therefore, the CCP has a history of violent crackdowns to quell dissent and silence opposing voices in the country. Tiananmen Square is among the most brutal representations of these principles in action.

Today, there are many Chinese people staring down their own version of tanks:

The Uyghur people face ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity that has at least 1.8 million people held in camps and
3 million enslaved.

Hong Kongers watched their
freedom disappear after the CCP implemented a national security law that stripped them of their most basic rights.

Tibetans see the CCP attempt to
erase their religion, culture, and language while tearing down monasteries and stealing their natural resources.

Sadly, 35 years after that fateful day in 1989, the CCP has not fundamentally changed. But neither has the desire of the Chinese people to fight for freedom. The flame for freedom remains alive in the hearts of the Chinese people – no matter how much effort the CCP puts into extinguishing it.

I have the pleasure of knowing many brave Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hong Kongers, and others who found freedom beyond China’s borders. Their voices and advocacy are among the most powerful forces for good in advocating a brighter future for China.

The U.S. and the international community must do a better job of supporting the Chinese people who today desire reform and change in their country. Strong statements of condemnation are not enough. Action must be taken to hold the CCP accountable for its ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity against the Uyghurs, undermining of freedom in Hong Kong, and ongoing gross human rights violations committed daily against the Chinese people.

CCP officials responsible for ongoing rights violations should face financial consequences in the form of sanctions for their wrongdoing. Persecuted Uyghurs and Hong Kongers should be extended
expedited refugee resettlement in the U.S. And every high-level meeting between U.S. and Chinese counterparts should come with explicit requests to release innocent persons extra-judicially held by the CCP.

The anniversary of Tiananmen should serve as a reminder of the deep and abiding need for global advocacy in support of the Chinese people’s freedoms. A failure to do so does grave injustice to the cause of liberty.
