King Ludwig II and his Neuschwanstein-
Builder of fairy-tale castles and palaces filled with gold, lover of opera and rider of mechanical swans, His Royal Highness Mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886) presides as official host of the Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest began as the wedding celebration of his grandparents, King Ludwig I and Queen Therese.
Although Ludwig II was officially declared Mad by critics for draining the Bavarian treasury by building grandios castles, he can still be found at the Oktoberfest celebrating with his adoring subjects.
If King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein Castle (pictured above) seems familiar, it's because Walt Disney was so taken with it's fairy tale appearance that he created a scaled replica as the entrance to Disneyland.
The castle was built starting in 1869, and was filled with every modern technology of his day. It had a telephone system to call his servants, warm and cold running water, an elevator, a plate warmer, and a completely automatic spit whose technology was based on a plan developed by Leonardo da'Vinci.
