By the time she is finished packing, the backpack is quite10 heavy,11 but she has everything she needs for the day.

When packed and ready to go, she slings12 the backpack over her shoulder13 and heads for14 the door. She must get tired of15 carrying that heavy bag around all the time. At least16 she doesn’t have to worry about17 getting enough18 exercise.19

Answers:

1. I usually carry a pencil case and any books I need for the day in my school bag.

2. I prefer a backpack because it is safer to carry when I ride my bike.

3. Yes, I’m tired of carrying my school bag around.

Unit 5: Naptime1 at School

The teacher in this classroom must2 be extremely3 boring, as4 all the children have fallen asleep.5 Actually,6 it is part of the daily7 routine8 for most Taiwanese school children. From 12:00 till9 12:30 they eat their lunch. This is followed10 by a nap that lasts11 until about 1:20. Some teachers believe that by having the children take a short nap after lunch they will be refreshed12 and ready to learn for the second half of the day.

The standard13 position14 seems to be hunched15 over with your head resting16 on folded17 arms. Some students say that this is a very uncomfortable18 position and claim19 that it gives them sore20 arms. Others say that being hunched over while having a full belly21 makes them feel a bit sick. Regardless of 22 whether23 or not they like it, it is the policy24 of some teachers. I hope those students who don’t like it get used to25 it, as there is no room26 in the classroom or the school budget27 for dozens of 28 beds.

Questions:

1. Why are all the children sleeping?

2. What is the problem with sleeping hunched over?

3. Why can’t the school buy beds?
