(法新社華盛頓四日電)美國波音飛機公司今天表示,由於螺絲安裝問題,以及受到機械工人罷工的嚴重影響,原訂的787夢幻客機首航時間將延後。

波音公司負責夢幻客機計畫的發言人李契表示,客機的首航將「無法如期在第四季實施。」

她指出,公司是根據螺絲零件問題和一直到上週才結束,長達五十八天的機械工罷工等情況評估這項計畫,將在所有的程序都完成後,重新宣布新的首航時間表。

李契說,公司的檢查人員發現,四架在波音華盛頓艾佛雷特廠內進行最後裝配的787測試機,有百分之三用來結合機身各部份的螺絲安裝不正確。

她說,有些不是太短就是太長,無法適當的結合各部份。

她表示,問題出在包括美國境內和國外的結構供應商。

這種機型的機翼由日本三菱代理生產、機身由義大利的艾倫尼亞電機公司負責;另兩家美國廠商伏特飛機製造公司和Spirit Aerosystems分別負責生產尾部和機頭部分。

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Boeing Tuesday postponed the first test flight of its new 787 Dreamliner because of problems with fasteners and a crippling 58-day machinists strike.

The Dreamliner's "first flight is not going to be accomplished" in the fourth quarter as planned, Yvonne Leach, a Boeing spokeswoman for the Dreamliner program, told AFP.

The company is assessing the program in light of the fastener problems and a 58-day machinists strike that ended Sunday and will announce a new Dreamliner launch timetable when that that process is completed, she said.

Leach said company inspectors found that about three percent of the fasteners used to hold together sections and parts of the new plane were incorrectly sized.

Some of them were too short and some were too long, so they did not properly hold together sections and parts, she said.

Boeing is assembling four 787 test jets at its plant in Everett, Washington.

In a production departure, Boeing has relieved heavily on outside contractors for the 787, drawing criticism from labor unions about outsourced jobs.

The faulty fastener installations occurred with Boeing's US and foreign structure suppliers for the Dreamliner, Leach said.

Japan's Mitsubishi supplies the wings; Alenia of Italy is building the fuselage, and two US firms, Vought Aircraft Industries and Spirit Aerosystems, are constructing the tail and nose, respectively.

Leach said the fastener problems were being corrected in Everett and by the suppliers, stressing that production problems were a normal part of building aircraft.

Leach said the 58-day machinists strike affected production of the Dreamliner as well as other aircraft "day for day."

Boeing's 27,000 machinists returned to work Sunday after voting by a large majority to accept a federally mediated four-year labor contract.

The strike launched September 6 was estimated by some analysts to have cost the company more than 100 million dollars per day.

Hurt by the strike, Dreamliner delays and a difficult economic environment, Boeing announced in late October that third-quarter net profit fell 38 percent.

The group delivered only 84 aircraft in the July-September period, 35 fewer than scheduled, after delivering 125 in the second quarter and 115 in the first.

It was the fourth time Boeing has delayed the Dreamliner launch. The first deliveries of the 787, initially planned for the first half of 2008, most recently had been pushed back to the third quarter of 2009 due to production difficulties.

The Dreamliner, Boeing's first new model in over a decade, takes advantage of the huge advances made in aviation technology in the past decade, and was designed using high-tech plastic composites instead of aluminum.

According to Boeing, the 787 will use 20 percent less fuel than today's airplanes of comparable size.

Boeing says it has received nearly 900 orders to date for the 787 Dreamliner from more than 55 customers worldwide.

Analysts at Jefferies & Co. said the latest production issues should be addressed "within a reasonable period of time."

"The appropriate fasteners are available, so there should not be any further delay beyond the inspection and reassembly process," they wrote in a client note.

Shares in Boeing closed 1.46 percent higher at 53.62 dollars amid a powerful rally as Americans voted in presidential and congressional elections.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Program Completes Static Test Analysis, Gauntlet Tests

EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today completed the review and analysis of the static test that was conducted Nov. 30 to validate the side-of-body modification made to the 787 Dreamliner.

"I am happy to report that the program has validated the airplane structure for the 787 Dreamliner," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program.

Fancher also reported that the 787 team has completed final gauntlet testing on the first airplane. Testing lasted for just two days because only improvements made earlier this year during previous testing had to be examined. "We are very pleased with the results of this final functional testing. With the successful completion of static testing and this functional testing, our focus now moves to first flight."

During the test on the 787 Dreamliner static test airframe, the wing and trailing edges of the airframe were subjected to their limit load -- the highest loads expected to be seen in service. The limit-load test was required to clear the airplane for first flight. Boeing's test strategy is to conduct all limit-load tests and analyze data before conducting the ultimate load series, which is required for certification and will be conducted next year.

Boeing announced June 23 that it was necessary to reinforce an area of structure at the side-of-body section of the 787. The modification entails installing new fittings at 34 stringer locations within the joint where the wing attaches to the fuselage. The 787 team has completed modifications on the first three flight-test airplanes and the full-scale static test airplane.

First flight of the 787 Dreamliner is expected to occur after final flight readiness reviews, receipt of documentation from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and taxi testing. Both taxi testing and first flight are subject to weather conditions.

"We are pleased with the pace of progress in preparing to enter our flight test program," said Fancher.

Before Boeing can undergo final high-speed taxi tests ahead of first flight, the 787 must pass two major milestones.

The first is a major series of tests for ZA001 - Boeing's first 787 test aircraft - that comes in the form of closed loop "Final Gauntlet" testing to evaluate ZA001's systems while fooling the aircraft in believing it is flying.

Final Gauntlet tests are scheduled to begin as early as 8 December and last -two to- three days. Boeing says its flight test preparations have the Final Gauntlet being completed ahead of taxi testing.

Programme sources say the Final Gauntlet will be split into two primary blocks. The first includes a B1 first flight profile, the standard checkout of all aircraft systems as part of standard production testing. The second block will be a more rigorous "first flight" final gauntlet with an expanded profile of tests and failure scenarios.

The second milestone, expected to come by 10 December, is a final validation of the side-of-body reinforcement designed to strengthen the upper stringers of the wing and centre wing box of the 787.

Boeing announced 23 June that the 787 was grounded to design a fix that would provide full structural margins to the aircraft's side-of-body structure. The company completed modification on 12 November.

The modification consisted of installing new fittings at 34 stringer locations within the joint where the wing meets the fuselage.

Boeing completed all pre-flight tests on the 787 static airframe on 30 November and said results would be analyzed within 10 days.

On 8 December, Boeing also plans to set up its Flight Emulation Test System (FETS), that interfaces directly with the aircraft and governs the gauntlet test.

The FETS system is part of a Boeing-patented method of "fooling" the aircraft's inertial and air data systems while in a simulated flying environment. This "stimuli", according to the original 1993 Boeing patent, causes aircraft systems to respond, allowing Boeing to demonstrate in-flight performance while remaining on the ground.

ZA001 recently completed an initial flight readiness review, followed by thrust reverser actuation, along with the central processor that monitors the aircraft's gross weight and center of gravity.

During the weekend, programme sources say ZA001 also completed electronic brake checks operated only on the main battery, along with hydraulic system leaks checks and regression testing of the latest flight control software build, version 8.0.2.

Boeing's first flight window remains slated for any time in December, but sources say that the company is targeting 15 December for the aircraft's maiden sortie.

Boeing's 787 first flight window opens on 14 December, reports Flightglobal affiliate FlightBlogger.

The new date, reports FlightBlogger, accelerates the internal schedule for first flight by about eight days, reflecting the programme's rising confidence.

Previous reports had targeted 22 December for first flight.

The final date of the 787's first flight is ultimately dependent the validation of the side-of-body modification, the readiness of the aircraft and its systems, as well as cooperation of weather in Seattle.

Boeing has declined to specify a date for 787 first flight, but maintains that the aircraft will fly before the close of December.

The American airframer is currently in the process of a 10-day analysis of data collected during recent static tests aimed at validating the 787's side-of-body reinforcement. While this process is on-going, Boeing is preparing ZA001, the first flight test aircraft, for its maiden flight.

ZA001 was returned to the flight line on 30 November to begin preparations for first flight that recently included auxillary power unit and engine runs.

Middle East Boeing 787 customers will be encouraged by news from Seattle that the airframer has completed the installation of reinforcements within the side-of-body section on the first Dreamliner.

The modification entails installing new fittings at 34 stringer locations within the join where the wing attaches to the fuselage. The work is required to address the fact that the upper stringers of the wing-to-body join were not strong enough to meet US Federal Aviation Administration certification requirements for static strength. This pushed the airliner's planned first flight target from mid-2009 to year-end.

Having completed ZA001, Boeing says it expects to complete the installation on the 787 static-test airframe and the second fight-test aircraft in the coming days.

"Completing this work is a significant step toward first flight. We continue to be pleased with the progress of the team and remain confident the first flight of the 787 Dreamliner will occur before the end of the year," says Scott Fancher, vice-president and general manager of the 787 programme. "We will test the modification on the full-scale static test airframe later this month. As soon as we confirm the loads are being handled appropriately in the joint we will complete pre-flight activities on the airplane."

Once Boeing completes the modification on the static test airframe, the aircraft will be refitted with strain gauges and instrumentation required for testing. Additionally, access doors, systems, seals and fasteners removed from airplane one to provide access for the wing-to-body join fix are being restored to prepare for continued testing on the aircraft.

Once ZA001 is fully restored, the flight-test team plans to conclude another set of gauntlet and taxi tests to ensure the systems are ready for flight, which is targeted for late December.

Boeing holds more than 130 787 orders in the Middle East, with customers including Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian, as well as lessors Alafco, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise and LCAL.

After airplane No. 1 is restored, the flight-test team will perform another set of gauntlet and taxi tests to ensure that all systems are ready for flight. Fancher noted that with the exception of a single high-speed taxi test, all remaining first flight activities have been successfully completed on the first flight-test airplane.

Boeing is pointing increasingly to a late December first flight target for the 787 as it awaits completion of validation tests of the side-of-body modification that prevented the initial flight taking place in late June.

Preparations for the flight remain on hold until validation tests on static test airframe ZY997 are finished. Even then there’s more waiting to go through while Boeing and the FAA evaluate the results and confirm the design meets the required goals.

Although Boeing isn’t discussing the details of the static testing schedule, the implications are that pre-flight activity (gauntlet tests) could be getting underway around the end of November with the first flight window being Dec. 17-24. If more issues crop up, the company still has the remaining week in December to achieve its target of flying by yearend.

The diversion of engineering resources to Boeing's troubled Dreamliner has forced the airframer to give up on its plan to fly the first 747-8 Freighter on 9 December and deliver an aircraft to Cargolux in the third quarter of next year.

The three-month delivery delay, to the fourth quarter of 2010, is being attributed to an accumulation of small engineering issues. One programme engineer likened the delay to "death by 1,000 cuts".

The latest delay forced Boeing to take a third quarter earning charge of $640 million owing to "re-work and disruption" and a further $360 million to cover the cargo market collapse that has forced a scaled-back ramp-up to two aircraft amonth.

With 747-8F resources constrained to feed the 787's demands, "more engineering errors escaped than what could be considered normal", he says, adding that "workers are adjusting to building a new airplane. A lot of them have been moved around...so their work lacks continuity, which leads to production errors."

Of the total number of tasks required to take a 747-8 from structural build to pre-flight activities, just over 50% had been fully completed at the time the delay was announced, according to company sources. Many of the tasks are unfinished owing to engineering changes.

Before the delay announcement, the first 747-8F (RC501) was set to leave the final assembly line for the paint hangar around 11 October.

In May, 747 vice-president and general manager Mohammad "Mo" Yahyavi declared: "I have all the resources I need now for both the freighter and the Intercontinental."

However, the June discovery that the 787's wing-to-body join needed re-engineering left 747-8I launch customer Lufthansa, whose passenger variant service entry remains unchanged, expecting a further programme delay.

Chief financial officer Stephan Gemkow said at the time: "I'm sure again the delay of the 787 will mean that they have to pull in more engineering resources, and that will have even further delays, as a consequence, for the 747-8. I would not be surprised to learn this some weeks or months in the future."

[據英國《飛行國際》2009年9月24日報導]波音開始對兩架波音787“夢幻飛機”的機翼進行修改,波音787預計將於2009年底進行首飛,用來進行首飛的飛機為ZA001號,用來進行靜力試驗的ZY997號飛機目前正在進行修改。

      波音表示整個準備、安裝和修復工作需要3個月左右,據相關報導安裝工作需要30天左右時間。在安裝完成以後波音需要將ZA001號恢復到首飛狀態,其中包括清除工作過程中留在機翼油箱中的殘屑。

      波音表示為了對機翼進行修改,其中的一些系統和艙門被拆除,在修改完成之後需要對這些系統和設備重新安裝。在安裝完成之後,波音將在ZY997上進行一系列的靜力試驗對設計進行驗證,為ZA001的首飛掃清障礙。在停滯了近3個月之後,ZA001號飛機將重新進行一些綜合試驗和滑行試驗,為首飛做準備。

      波音於6月23日表示,在靜力試驗中發現波音787機翼與機身連接處的強度不夠,不滿足FAA取證中對強度的要求,使得原定於2009年第二季度首飛的目標被迫再次推遲。(中國航空工業發展研究中心  溫坤)

Boeing begins 787 wing modifications

Boeing has begun modifying two 787 Dreamliners as it pushes toward meeting its goal of flying the aircraft by the end of 2009.

The company's first 787 to fly, ZA001, along with the static test airframe, ZY997, are currently undergoing modification to return full static strength to the upper stringers of the structure that joins the wing to the side of body of the aircraft.

Boeing says the entire process of preparation, installation and restoration will take about three months, with programme sources indicating that the installation itself will take roughly 30 days to complete.

After the installation is complete, Boeing will have to restore ZA001 to flying condition which includes a thorough aqueous wash to remove any debris accumulated during the work inside the fuel tanks.

Boeing says that to gain access to the area being modified, some systems and access doors were removed and will have to be reinstalled.

Following the completion of the installation, Boeing will first analyse the fix on ZY997 through a series of static tests that will validate the design, ultimately clearing ZA001 for flight.

After being in the shop for three months, ZA001 will go through a "warm up" process by repeating some gauntlet testing and taxi testing to prepare the 787 for it's maiden flight, says Boeing.

The company announced 23 June that it had discovered that the upper stringers of the wing to body join were not strong enough to meet FAA certification requirements for static strength, curtailing plans to achieve first flight by the close of the second quarter.

(法新社紐約31日電) 美國波音公司(Boeing)今天任命旗下商用飛機部門(BCA)新主管,由分支整合系統防衛公司(Boeing Integrated Defense Systems)總裁阿爾鮑(Jim Albaugh)接任。

波音787型夢幻客機(Dreamliner)交機時間一延再延,導致商用飛機部門陷入困境。

波音指出,阿爾鮑明天將接下卡森(Scott Carson)的位子,出掌商用飛機部門。

阿爾鮑現年59歲,擔任波音整合系統防衛公司總裁兼執行長。

波音在聲明中指出,63歲、2006年起擔任商用飛機分支總裁及執行長的卡森,將於今年年底退休。

波音8月27日宣布,787型夢幻客機明年年底將交貨給日本全日空航空(All Nippon Airways)。
