Israel eyes more Apache upgrades and V-22 assessment

The Israeli air force is planning a series of major enhancements to its rotary-wing fleet, including the upgrade of additional Boeing AH-64A Apache attack helicopters and a possible purchase of Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotors.

Israel operates 18 new and remanufactured AH-64Ds (below), and part of its remaining fleet of A-model aircraft are now candidates for modernisation to the Longbow configuration. "These helicopters have unprecedented operational benefits, and we want more of them," says a senior air force source.

The source also confirms that there is an ongoing evaluation of the V-22, noting: "We think that it is logical to evaluate this seriously as a part of the force structure." An Israeli air force test pilot will soon fly the Osprey at a US Marine Corps base, the source adds.

Additional air force modernisation efforts include a recently completed major upgrade to the service's Bell AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters, and a new programme to enhance the capabilities of its Sikorsky CH-53 transports. The CH-53 2025 programme includes the installation of 20 new systems, including advanced electronic warfare equipment, a satellite communications suite, an altitude hold and hovering stabilisation system, a laser obstacle ranging and display system and new main gear boxes.

Network-centric warfare systems are also being added to several of the air force's helicopter types under the improvement drive.

The air force has also begun the search for a replacement for Aerospatiale SA565MA helicopters operated from the Israeli navy's Sar-5 missile boats. "We will need a replacement for these helicopters to keep the operational qualities of our navy," the air force source says.

USMC MV-22 Osprey pilots to do more simulator time

The US Marine Corps is modifying the training syllabus for pilots transitioning to the Bell Boeing MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor to place greater emphasis on simulator time and reduce the number of flights in the real aircraft.

The changes are being introduced as a fourth squadron undergoes conversion training for the MV-22 at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River in North Carolina.

Col Mike Denning, commanding officer of MV-22 training squadron VMMT-204, says evaluation of co-pilots finishing the four-and-half-month syllabus showed that there was scope to move some training sorties conducted in the aircraft to the simulator.

"In the past it was weighted towards the simulator, but we looked at the pilots we were producing and found out that these guys were pretty skilled," says Denning.

"We found out that some of the flights that we were flying in the aircraft could easily be transferred into the simulator, and we ended up saving quite a bit of money."

Transitioning aircrew acquire about 100h of "flight" time, of which about two-thirds are accumulated in the simulator and the rest using VMMT-204's 21 MV-22B Block A Ospreys.

Roughly four instrument and navigation flights that were conducted in the aircraft will now be carried out in the high-fidelity, full-motion simulators at MCAS New River.

"We used to do all the ground portions - where they would learn about the aircraft systems, cockpit management system, low-altitude tactics and formation flying - in one part, and then start flying," says Denning.

"Now we've broken that down a little bit so that they'll get the knowledge on the aircraft systems portion, they'll fly the simulator, they'll fly the familiarisation portion, and then we'll go back to the simulator and build upon that. It's a little bit more 'stovepipe', as opposed to everything being done on the simulator and then pretty much everything being done on the aircraft."

To date three Boeing CH-46 helicopter squadrons have transitioned to the MV-22, the first of which has returned from a seven-month deployment to Iraq. The second is currently operating in Iraq and the third is undergoing pre-deployment training.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US military's long-gestating V-22 Osprey, built to fly both like a helicopter and an airplane, performed well in Iraq its first official field deployment, the Marine Corps announced Friday.
 
"I am proud of the aircraft performance. It is very satisfying to see how well it performed," Lieutenant Colonel Paul Rock, commanding officer of the first squadron of Ospreys deployed in Iraq, said in a Pentagon press conference.

Rock said the Marine squadron of Ospreys, deployed in Al-Assad, al-Anbar province, undertook 2,500 transport and evacuation missions over the seven month deployment between September 2007 and April 2008.

The hybrid transport, which can take-off and land vertically like a helicopter, then tilt horizontally its two wingtip turboprop rotors to propel it as a long-distance airplane, was developed with the aim of replacing the marines' Vietnam War-era Ch-46 transport helicopters.

But its development, dating back to 1981, was marred by delays, cost overruns and then safety concerns for its revolutionary technology.

The worries were heightened by two in-flight accidents in 2000 that killed more than 20 soldiers.

The V-22 Osprey is produced by Bell Helicopter Textron and Boeing, and 59 are now in operation, 30 with the marines.

It can carry 24 soldiers into the field, its tilt-rotor engines allowing it to land where there is little room but also carrying it to high altitudes where it is safe from ground attack.

Other than Iraq, the V-22s, which cost 70 million dollars a piece, would be useful in the US fight in Afghanistan, said Lieutenant General George Trautman, vice-commandant for marine aviation.

"It would be a very effective airplane in that environment," Trautman said.

360-Degree Gatling Gun in Works for USAF CV-22

U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command is planning to field a CV-22 Osprey aircraft armed with a first-of-its-kind, remote-operated M134 7.62mm Gatling gun able to lower beneath the aircraft and fire at targets in any direction, providing a 360-degree attack capability, BAE officials said April 8.

The BAE-built weapon, called the Remote Guardian System, could also be picked up by the Marine Corps for use on its growing fleet of V-22 Ospreys.

The first major flight test of the RGS is scheduled for the end of May at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

The RGS' Dillon Aero M134 fires 3,000 rounds a minute out to a maximum range of 1,000 meters. At the same time, the RGS is built to accommodate a .50-cal machine gun or 40mm grenade launcher. The U.S. Army is also talking to BAE about the RGS, BAE officials said.

"It has applications for airborne fixed wing, UAS [and] rotary wing. It has application in the maritime environment, specifically for fast boats. On top of that it also has applications on the ground," said David Adamiak, BAE business development manager.

In fact, at a recent live-fire test for the RGS, the gun was mounted on a Humvee turret, Adamiak said.

Bell Boeing signs $10.4bn deal for 167 V-22s

Bell Boeing has signed a five-year, $10.4 billion contract to produce 167 V-22 Osprey tiltrotors. This is the first multi-year procurement for the unique aircraft.

The contract covers 141 MV-22 assault transports for the US Marine Corps, plus 26 special-operations CV-22Bs for the US Air Force. Deliveries under the contract will be completed in 2014.

Multi-year procurement is expected to save as much as $427 million over annual contracts, the US Department of Defense estimates.

Orders for the Osprey now total 299, of which 100 have been delivered. Twelve Marine Corps MV-22s have been operational in Iraq since October 2007.

The USMC plans to procure a total of 360 MV-22s, while USAF Special Operations Command is to receive 50 CV-22s. A further 50 combat search-and-rescue HV-22s for the US Navy is planned, but not yet funded.
