Japan companies unite to bring robots to homes

TOKYO (AFP) - Four Japanese companies joined together Wednesday in a bid to create a mainstream market for robots and to stay a step ahead of rising competition from South Korea.

The companies -- Tmsuk, ZMP, VStone, Business Design Laboratory Co (BDL) -- said they were forming a loose federation to exchange technology with one another and market their products together overseas.

Japan has been a leader in robotics, frequently making headlines for humanoids that do everything from playing the violin to babysitting to helping the elderly.

But while industrial robots are commonly put to use in Japan, companies have struggled to find a mass consumer market for humanoids, in part because of the prohibitive costs.

The companies said they together hoped to sell a total of 200,000 to 300,000 robots within the next five years, some 10 times what they sell now.

"In the coming decade, we believe robots will widely enter into our everyday lives. They have proven to be effective in services, education and entertainment," the four companies said in a joint statement.

"However, in order to expand their contribution to the overall national economy, it is essential not to stop at research and development but to directly engage in market operations," the newly created Federation for the Market Creation of Next-Generation Robots said.

As Japan ages, household robots could include BDL's "ifbot," a white robot with green eyes and a flashing smile that can prevent dementia among the elderly by quizzing them, singing songs or giving health advice.

Tmsuk president Yoichi Takamoto warned Japan's standing could be overtaken by high-tech neighbour South Korea, which has set a goal of a robot in every household by as early as 2013.

"I think that Japan's robotics technology is still number one, but I'm not sure how long that will be. South Korea is working quite hard in this field," said BDL president Kenji Kimura.

The companies complained that Japan has not supported robotics in the same way as South Korea, which last year set up a 100 billion-won (10 million-dollar) fund to encourage innovation and is planning the world's first robot theme park by 2013.

"In Japan we are trying to start a robot business but at this rate, I don't know whether that will ever happen," Tmsuk's Takamoto said.

Energy ministers get 'buddy' humanoids

Sun Jun 8, 1:38 PM ET

AOMORI, Japan (AFP) - Cabinet ministers from the world's biggest economies who gathered in Japan for grim talks on energy security have one tiny thing to celebrate -- the world's smallest humanoid robot.

The Japanese hosts plan to send all 11 ministers special editions of the 16.5-centimetre (half-foot) robot after wowing them with the toy at a dinner Saturday.

"With this, you won't forget about me," Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Akira Amari said to laughter at the dinner, according to an official from the robot's maker Tomy Co. Ltd. who was present.

The interest in the "i-Sobot" seemed unabated Sunday, with Canadian Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn stopping by a desk set up by Tomy for the energy talks in the northern Japanese city of Aomori.

He picked up the tiny robot and dubbed it, "my new friend."

The minister, who has two children, said he himself would play with it "all the time."

"With this on my desk... as I solve government problems, I'll use the i-Sobot," he told AFP.

Japan will send the robots commemorating the Aomori meeting to ministers attending from the Group of Eight industrial powers plus India, China and South Korea.

The technology-loaded robot, whose special edition is black and speaks English, is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's smallest mass-produced humanoid.

The i-Sobot is able to make 200 physical movements, including somersaults and other complex acrobatics, speaks 180 words and responds to verbal commands.

"We think this represents the unique Japanese culture of cartoons and animated films that consider robots to be a 'buddy,'" Tomy spokeswoman Mei Kudo said.

"Rather than being a machine showcasing cool technology, it is a comical character that lies down and scratches its bottom," she said.

When Tomy launched the robot, the company said it needed to reach out to adults and lift the barriers between toys and high-tech products.

Tomy has shipped 20,000 units in Japan and another 26,000 overseas since its October 2007 launch. It is priced at about 30,000 yen (285 dollars).

2,000th TALON Military Robot Deployed

(Source: QinetiQ North America; issued May 6, 2008)

MCLEAN, Va. --- QinetiQ North America, a global developer of innovative technology solutions for national defense, today announced that the Foster-Miller subsidiary of its Technology Solutions Group has delivered the 2,000th TALON robot to the U.S. military. More TALON robots are deployed with the U.S. military than any other robot.

TALON robots are deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, primarily to assist military personnel with the extremely dangerous job of detecting and disabling roadside bombs -- the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by hostile forces to attack troops. The TALON robot is able to remotely disarm the IED without placing the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and combat engineers in harm's way.

Many robots have been damaged in their mission, some multiple times, but today they are rapidly repaired by military personnel at Joint Robot Repair facilities located throughout the world, a type of robot hospital. TALON robots, on average, can be repaired after blast damage and returned to service more than 10 times, before complete replacement is necessary -- a testament to TALON's ruggedness and sustainability.

TALON robots were first deployed in 2000, when EOD teams in Bosnia used the robots to safely remove and dispose of live grenades. In 2001, TALON robots were used at the World Trade Center, searching through the rubble for 45 days and nights to help find survivors and victims. The robots were also used to evaluate the structural integrity of the Hudson River's retaining walls.

According to Dr. William Ribich, President of the Technology Solutions Group, QinetiQ North America, this performance demonstrated TALON's ruggedness, ease of use and ability to withstand repeated decontaminations without failure and led to the deployment of TALON in record numbers for service in Afghanistan and Iraq.

From 2001 to 2007 the company delivered 1,000 TALON robots to the U.S. military. Today, just 13 months later, the number of deployed TALON robots has doubled to reach 2,000 -- far surpassing any other military-use robot.

"Our government and our company are dedicated to finding innovative solutions that better protect our warfighters," said Ribich. "The TALON robot has helped save thousands of EOD and combat engineers from injury or possible death in the performance of their primary mission of disarming IEDs."

Since its initial deployment in 2000, the TALON product line has expanded to include robots devoted to specific tasks, such as IED disarmament, reconnaissance, hazardous materials work, combat engineering support and SWAT/MP unit assistant. The TALON robot is modular, allowing for many types of mission-specific arm attachments and negating the need for multiple, specialized robots. It is also man-portable, easily transported and instantly ready for action. TALON moves as fast as its human counterpart on flat terrain, is highly mobile in rough and urban terrain, and has the longest battery life of all in-theatre ground robots.

The family of TALON robots has grown both smaller and larger in size with the respective robotic developments of Dragon Runner and MAARS this year. These new robots address the military's need for standoff protection from the enemy, over and above the successful use of TALON for counter-IED missions. According to Ribich, this expansion of the TALON line of robots is QinetiQ North America's response to the military's growing interest in using robots not only for combat support, but for future combat operations as well.

"We're developing and expanding our line of products to meet the military's future needs because we're dedicated to delivering the best robotic solutions in the industry," added Ribich. "With today's full logistics pipeline for robot maintenance, training and support, we're entering a new era of military robotics, and TALON robots stand ready to assist troops on any battlefield in the world."

QinetiQ North America provides world-class technology and responsive solutions to U.S. government customers. With more than 5,500 engineers, scientists and professionals working in partnership with customers, QNA develops innovative technology solutions to meet the challenges of national defense, homeland security and information access. QinetiQ North America is part of QinetiQ Group plc, one of the world's leading defense and security technology companies.

BAE SYSTEMS-LED TEAM TO DEVELOP MINIATURE ROBOTS FOR MILITARY USE28 Apr 2008 | Ref. 132/2008

MERRIMACK, New Hampshire ¡X BAE Systems will lead a team of scientists that will develop miniature robots to improve military situational awareness. The company signed a $38 million agreement with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory to lead an alliance of researchers and scientists from the Army, academia and industry.

The Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology (MAST) Collaborative Technology Alliance will research and develop advanced robotic equipment for use in urban environments and complex terrain, such as mountains and caves. The alliance will create an autonomous, multifunctional collection of miniature intelligence-gathering robots that can operate in places too inaccessible or dangerous for humans.

¡§Robotic platforms extend the warfighter's senses and reach, providing operational capabilities that would otherwise be costly, impossible, or deadly to achieve,¡¨ said Dr. Joseph Mait, MAST cooperative agreement manager for the Army Research Laboratory. ¡§The MAST alliance is a highly collaborative effort, with each partner from government, academia, and industry playing a significant role.¡¨

MAST will advance fundamental science and technology for future robotic systems in several key areas, including small-scale aeromechanics and ambulation; propulsion; sensing, processing and communications; navigation and control; microdevices and integration; platform packaging; and systems architectures.

¡§The technologies that will be developed under MAST represent capabilities and techniques that will influence nearly all of the products that BAE Systems will develop and produce in the future,¡¨ said Steve Scalera, MAST program manager for BAE Systems in Merrimack, New Hampshire. ¡§We and our alliance partners have committed our brightest minds to make the MAST program a success.¡¨

The Alliance has a planned duration of five years with an option to extend for an additional five years. MAST consists of four primary research areas, led by four principal alliance members: BAE Systems will lead Microsystems Integration, the University of Michigan will lead Microelectronics, the University of Maryland will lead Microsystem Mechanics, and the University of Pennsylvania will lead Processing for Autonomous Operation.

The alliance also has five general members participating in one or more of the research areas: the University of California at Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of New Mexico, and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Robobug goes to war: Troops to use electronic insects to spot enemy 'by end of the year'

It may have seemed like just another improbable scene from a Hollywood sci-fi flick ¡V Tom Cruise battling against an army of robotic spiders intent on hunting him down.

But the storyline from Minority Report may not be quite as far fetched as it sounds.

British defence giant BAE Systems is creating a series of tiny electronic spiders, insects and snakes that could become the eyes and ears of soldiers on the battlefield, helping to save thousands of lives.

Prototypes could be on the front line by the end of the year, scuttling into potential danger areas such as booby-trapped buildings or enemy hideouts to relay images back to troops safely positioned nearby.

Soldiers will carry the robots into combat and use a small tracked vehicle to transport them closer to their targets.

Then they would swarm into the building and relay images back to the soldiers' hand-held or wrist-mounted computers, warning them of any threats inside.

BAE Systems has just signed a £19million contract to develop the robots for the US Army.

Plans for a creature that can crawl like a spider are said to be well developed, and researchers eventually hope to be able to create creatures that can slither like a snake or fly like a dragonfly.

While some of the creatures will be fitted with small cameras, others will be equipped with sensors that will be able to detect the presence of chemical, biological or radioactive weapons.

A computer-generated video from BAE Systems shows the tiny invaders being released by a soldier, before scouting out a suspect building, which is finally blown up by ground forces.

BAE Systems scientists from the UK and America plan an army of the electronic bugs, and have ambitions to equip every front-line soldier with them.

Programme manager Steve Scalera was inspired by the way creatures use their senses to detect danger.

"What we are doing is providing an enhanced awareness for soldiers, basically an extension to their eyes and ears," he said.

"The creatures have external sensors. They can be tossed out into a building or a cave or even a pile of rubble and then send images back to the troops.

"The idea is to get a number of these working together ¡V some tiny, some maybe up to a foot in length, and all going into a building together carrying out different tasks. Eventually we hope to have animals flying and slithering.

"The five-year programme has just started but we could have them with soldiers within six months, and then continue to develop the concept as the project goes along."

Despite the high-tech gadgetry involved, BAE Systems insists once production is in full swing, each bug will cost no more than £100 to produce.

The Ministry of Defence declined to comment.
